In a world where criticism often overshadows praise, our client’s recent LinkedIn post shed light on a concerning statistic: 88% of the workforce feels unappreciated. Their unique twist? Instead of blaming society, they turned introspective, saying, “We are quick to criticize and slow to praise. I say we, I mean ME.” and added to the post “In recent years I’ve made the habit of physically bitting my tongue when I want to speak negatively. The tongue has more power then I ever gave it credit for.”

This revelation points to a broader issue, one that affects the morale, productivity, and overall well-being of employees.

The Unappreciated Workforce: In today’s fast-paced and demanding work environment, it’s all too common for the significance of appreciation to be overlooked. The sobering statistic that 88% of the workforce feels unappreciated is a wake-up call. This feeling of being unnoticed or unacknowledged can have profound consequences. It’s not limited to specific industries or roles; it’s a pervasive issue that impacts employees across various sectors. Those who don’t feel valued in the workplace are more susceptible to burnout, disengagement, and decreased productivity. In severe cases, this lack of appreciation can lead to high employee turnover, further destabilizing the work environment.

Self-Reflection: Our client’s LinkedIn post doesn’t merely point out a problem; it exemplifies a solution. By recognizing their role in the imbalance between criticism and praise, they set an example of evolving leadership. Self-awareness is a crucial step toward fostering a more appreciative and supportive work environment. The act of turning the spotlight inward and acknowledging one’s part in this dynamic represents a powerful commitment to personal and collective growth.

The Tongue’s Influence: What makes our client’s statement particularly intriguing is their mention of physically biting their tongue when tempted to speak negatively. This simple yet profound metaphor underscores the transformative power of our words. The tongue, often underestimated, can either be a source of harm or a tool for healing. The choice of words can perpetuate negativity or promote positivity. By making a conscious effort to refrain from negative comments, our client is likely creating a ripple effect within their sphere of influence. Their colleagues and team members may also be inspired to reconsider their approach to communication and leadership. It’s a testament to the fact that change often begins with us and the choices we make in our everyday interactions.

The Ripple Effect: Positive changes in communication and leadership can lead to a ripple effect within the workplace. When employees feel appreciated, their motivation and enthusiasm tend to rise. They become more engaged, productive, and collaborative. This, in turn, contributes to a more harmonious work environment where creativity and innovation can thrive. Our client’s realization and tangible action to change their communication approach can inspire others to follow suit. This type of influence is a powerful force for transforming workplace culture.

Why Appreciation Matters: To understand the significance of appreciation in the workplace, it’s essential to delve into why it matters. Beyond boosting morale, appreciation is intrinsically linked to higher job satisfaction, reduced stress levels, and increased employee loyalty. When individuals feel valued and recognized, they’re more likely to go the extra mile in their work, contributing to achieving organizational goals. Recognition, in its various forms, is a fundamental element in creating a positive, productive, and resilient work environment. It’s not merely a nicety; it’s a strategic tool for building a stronger, more successful organization. Appreciation is the cornerstone of fostering a workplace culture that thrives in the face of challenges and uncertainties.

Competing on price is a race to the bottom–a game you don’t want to play.

Charging higher prices ensures you:

Don’t have to compromise on quality

Give your customers a great experience

Enjoy your work

Only hire the best

Stay in business

Here are three tips to help you charge the prices you want.

Positioning

WalMart positions itself as the lowest price option, but you have to be a massive company to make this work.

Small businesses usually can’t compete on price, you have to find another way.

Instead, compete on value and customer experience. Providing a great product or service AND an exceptional customer experience allows you to charge a premium.

“A good customer experience means your customers will spend more. In fact, 86% of buyers are willing to pay more for a great customer experience. The more expensive the item, the more they are willing to pay, according to research from PWC.” [source]

I saw this play out recently in a local Facebook group. I went in to search for recommendations on a company to replace the gutters on my home. One post had several comments recommending a gutter company that “charges slightly more” but is totally worth it for the great service.

Get confident with your pricing

Unconfident in our tree pruning skills, we contacted two “professional” companies for quotes.

One person hummed and hawed when asked for a price. When he finally came up with a number, it was as if he pulled it out of thin air. Like he was asking himself, “based on what I know about her now, what can she pay?”

The second person came up with a price right away. This conveyed confidence and made me believe that they could deliver the service… and I didn’t wonder if the neighbour down the street was getting it for half the price.

When you know your numbers, you have a process for determining the price. You feel more confident and come across better in sales calls.

When you know your numbers, your expenses don’t get out of control. This helps keep your pricing competitive while keeping your margins profitable.

Talk to the right people

Identify the right people for your service at your desired price point.

Ever wonder why Canadian Tire doesn’t carry Gucci bags?

No?

Us neither. It’s a silly example, but matching up your services and prices to the right people is a simple but often overlooked part of marketing and selling. Creating strong customer personas will help you market and sell to people who are the right fit for you.

Don’t try and convince the wrong people, they will never get it. If you are talking to the right people, your pricing will be a non-issue.

Focusing in the value you bring, learning to price your products and services appropriately, and marketing your business to the right people will ensure you build a successful and profitable business for the long term.

Tracking your receipts is easiest if you have a system in place to record and file them as you go. If you don’t have a system in place, use this time to set one up. Some tips:

Organize by type of expense

Organize your receipts using folders, tags, or even envelopes

Record receipts at the time purchases are made

Back up receipts digitally by scanning them or taking pictures

Pro Tip: Use a service like Hubdoc to easily capture and manage expenses and feed them directly into your accounting system. Read more about how to set thus up in our post, Streamline Your Business.

Run Top 3 Financial Statements: Income Statement, Balance Sheet, & Cash Flow Statement

The “big three” financial statements are the best way to see, at a glance, where your business stands financially.

If your profits are lower than expected, you should make some changes as you head into the new year. If your profits are higher than expected, it might be a good time to make larger purchases for which you can record future depreciation.

Speak with a professional before making big purchases to ensure you have the cash on hand, and to understand depreciation rules.

Analyze cash flow statements

It’s a good idea to review your cash flow statements quarterly. Here are some things to look at for expenses:

Review by category, for example, advertising

Look for areas where you spent a lot of money

Was it worth it?

Did my advertising work? Did I go out to eat too much?.. Or have too many coffees?.. mmm coffee

Pro Tip: It’s easy to lose track of unused subscriptions, especially if you’ve set them up via auto-pay. Small recurring costs can add up quickly. Auditing these regularly will cut costs and keep your organization lean.

Reconcile accounts receivable

Run a report of unpaid invoices and make a plan to collect. Reconciling your AR will boost your cash flow and allow you to start the new year without outstanding invoices (and with cash in the bank).

Double-check payroll and benefits

Identify any issues or corrections to your payroll before the year’s end. Ensure easily forgotten benefits, such as educational reimbursement, health and life insurance, and company car, are accounted for.

Verify vendor & customer information

A lot can change in a year. December is a good time to verify your customers’ and vendors’ information. Check that phone numbers, email addresses, and contact names are accurate and up-to-date.

If time permits, evaluate your vendor relationship and look for opportunities to negotiate better deals in 2023.

Take some time to do this now so you can be present and relaxed over the holidays, and give your business a running start in January.

Streamlining is the process used to simplify or eliminate unnecessary tasks to improve the efficiency of operations in business.

Taking the time to streamline your operations will result in:

Fewer errors and delays

Reduce costs

Reduce hours spent on administrative tasks

Reduce STRESS

Here are some simple but effective ways to streamline your business.

Streamline Your Bookkeeping

Make any place your place of business using CLOUD ACCOUNTING

Cloud accounting software:

Keeps all your data encrypted and secure in one place

Accessible and synced across all of you and your team’s devices

Allows you to check current finances anytime, anywhere

Allows you to collaborate with your team and advisors

Eliminates the need to stay on top of data backups

In the event of a flood, fire, or other natural disaster, your data stays safe and you avoid downtime.

Working online enables the easy flow of data allowing you to seamlessly connect to the CRA, your bank, and other third-party apps.

Free Up Hours Every Week with Digital Receipt Capture

We use Hubdoc to easily capture, upload, and store receipts, statements, and other supporting documentation.

Electronic receipts are easier to file, retrieve, store, protect, and match with the bank feeds.

They are less likely to be lost, faded, damaged or destroyed.

Digital receipts help merchants avoid the cost of printing customer receipts and help reduce the environmental impact of paper receipts.

Digital receipts speed up the checkout process, saving you time!

Most importantly, digital receipts are CRA compliant.

How it works with paper receipts:

Before the receipt flies out the open window, you spill hot coffee on them, or they fade from sitting on the dash in the sun, follow these simple steps:

Make a note on the front of the receipt to indicate the purpose of the purchase.

Scan the paper receipt with your smartphone in an app like Dext, and it automatically uploads the information into your accounting software.

File the receipt in a portable folder in your vehicle.

Empty the folder at the office weekly.

– Adding a link in an invoice to pay it online is convenient for customers and good for your business’s cash flow.

– Online invoicing can integrate with accounting programs and consolidate record-keeping into one location.

– Save time and money tracking which invoices are paid, prepping new invoices and mailing them to customers.

– Digital invoices help your business avoid the cost of printing and postage along with reducing the environmental impact of paper invoices. It can be another way to get your marketing message to the customer!

– Accepting e-transfers and credit cards saves time and travel expenses to the bank during business hours.

– Having more payment options, now when you are smaller, you can get the bigger contracts because you aren’t worried about cash flow.

Streamline with Separate Business and Personal Bank Accounts & Credit Cards

Although setting up a business bank account can take extra time, there are benefits. Separate accounts will help you file more accurate tax returns and is the foundation for building your business credit, enabling you to apply for credit cards, lines of credit and loans in the business name rather than your own. The clearer your business records are, the simpler it will be to apply for credit if needed.

Separate bank accounts won’t guarantee fewer audits. However, separating your business transactions and providing a clear audit trail will make the process less painful. CRA can just say “no” if they see personal and business mixed, and they will deny everything.

Separating your business and personal transactions can save you both time and money. Eliminate the need to spend hours separating statements and receipts at month-end or tax time. You are isolating your company receivables and payables, allowing accurate cash flow planning and financial report preparation.

As a Sole Proprietor, using your business name and CRA number for all transactions lets your clients, customers, peers and suppliers know you are serious about your business and demonstrates professionalism. Portraying a professional image may favourably impact the terms of your account with your suppliers.

Often there are no other options but to use your personal credit card until the business credit has been established. Be diligent to keep all receipts, attach them to the statement, and explain on the receipt what it’s for… Take a picture, or email it to Hubdoc with a description.

Separate and dedicated accounts and credit cards for your business isn’t just a milestone moment in the growth of your business. It will set you up for success down the road.

Streamline with Trusted Professionals

Trusting a bookkeeper for your growing business makes good business sense. Bookkeepers aren’t there to judge how many Starbucks coffees you buy, they are just there to deal with the numbers, help you understand them, and how you can make the money work for you. Spend your time doing what you do best, and your bookkeeper will do the same! Bookkeepers love what they do, and you should be doing what you love, too. Be a business owner. Do what business owners do. Lead your company to bigger and better profits, and your bookkeeper will record your success.

“86.8% of all Canadian startups make it to year 2” [source]

How many times have we heard something like that? I’d like to see a statistic on how many hours of sleep new business owners lose.

These kinds of things can be disheartening, but I’m here to tell you that most of the causes behind these business failures are avoidable.

This article in the Globe & Mail lists 8 reasons your new business might be failing. More than half of those reasons could be mitigated through better financial management.

Most new business owners are great technicians, meaning they are good at what they do–landscaping, baking, welding–but they don’t have experience running a business.

The business owners that succeed understand their strengths and weaknesses and get help to fill in the gaps.

We all need to bootstrap to some degree in the beginning, but knowing when it’s time to get help is a key differentiator between those that succeed and those that fail.

Here are 4 ways the right financial partner can help you get and stay profitable:

1. Financial data

If you have your books in order and up-to-date, you have the financial data you need to make better business decisions. You can evaluate, forecast, and plan in a way that is impossible when you don’t know your numbers.

2. Cost management

It’s easy for costs to get out of control. Staying on top of your expenses, whether that’s procurement, inventory management, or accounts payable, this is a critical part of your overall cash flow management.

3. Cash flow

Speaking of cash flow…this is probably the most critical and least understood aspect of good financial management.

Your bank account balance is not an accurate reflection of your cash flow.

If your books are up-to-date, you will know your true cash flow position and adjust your actions accordingly. If you don’t manage your cash flow well, the results can be terminal for your business. Everything from negative impacts to your credit rating to losing staff because you can’t pay them on time.

4. Receivables

It’s amazing how quickly you will forget to issue an invoice or collect on an invoice if you run everything out of a shoe box in your truck.

Make sure your receivables are accurate: know who owes you money and have a system for follow-up and collection.

Is it time to get help from a financial professional?

It’s definitely something to think about. The right financial partner will help you go from a reactive, “oh sh$t!” business owner to a confident, proactive CEO.

Our Small Business Bookkeeping Audit is for you.

We take a deep dive into your figures to identify how you can tighten your business belt and boost your profitability.

Inflationary pressures on our businesses (and personal lives) have been growing.

Don’t despair! You aren’t completely helpless in this situation. There are things we can do as small businesses to survive, and even thrive in the midst of rising and unpredictable costs.

Here are 4 things you can do now:

1. Know Where Your Money is Going

Now is a great time to scrutinize your costs and find out what is going where. What costs can you cut entirely? What costs can you reduce? Look for recurring subscription payments, other supplier options, and expenses that are just unnecessary.

2. Pricing: Time to Raise Your Rates?

Knowing when to raise your rates can be tricky. Taking the time to evaluate your new costs and the effect on profit margins might just make it an easy decision. You have to raise your rates eventually to keep up with inflation (and to reflect your growing expertise). There’s no better time than now.

3. Increase Your Profitability

You’ve scrutinized your costs and evaluated your profit margins. Maybe you raised your prices. Here are 3 more things you can do to improve your profitability:

Identify unprofitable customers, services, products, or projects. Develop qualifying criteria to create space for more profitable activities.

Upsell, downsell, cross-sell… Existing customers are the easiest to sell to. What can you do to improve their experience? Identify a product or service that will benefit them AND increase the revenue value of existing customers.

Half the profitability battle is keeping some of what you earn. One of the tenets of the Profit First system that I help my clients with is allocating your profit to a separate bank account. If you keep all of your money in one account, you “forget” that it is earmarked for other things: expenses, slow times, and profit. Start putting a % of everything you earn in a Profit account. Pay yourself first.

If you’ve answered YES to one or more of these questions, your small business may be headed for some “Bad Weather.”

Recession, economic downturn, a dishonest partnership, or industry shakeout are just some of the events that can put your business to the test.

After the pandemic lockdown, my business and many of my clients’ businesses ground to a halt.

And we weren’t prepared for it.

I decided then and there that I wasn’t going to be caught in this situation again. I began looking for solutions to build more resiliency and profit into our businesses.

That’s when I discovered the Profit First system.

It’s brilliant in its simplicity, and effective because it works with human psychology rather than against it. It sets you up for success by helping you to master financial discipline and structures your business to run efficiently.

No matter how new or established your business is, you should not wait for the “Bad Weather” to implement Profit First. You can’t anticipate every hurdle your small business will encounter, but you can be prepared.

What is the key to being consistently profitable?

Profit First is a simple yet very effective approach to finances that works with human psychology to create profitable, sustainable businesses.

THE PROFIT FIRST FORMULA

The GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) formula for determining a business’s profit is

Sales – Expenses = Profit.

It is simple, logical and straightforward.

The problem is it doesn’t account for human behaviour. In the GAAP formula, profit is a leftover, an afterthought, something that is hopefully a pleasant surprise at the end of the year.

But profit is not a guarantee. We need to be intentional about profit if we want to get out of survival mode.

One way to do this is with the Profit First method.

With Profit First, you flip the formula to

Sales – Profit = Expenses.

Logically the math is the same, but from the perspective of the entrepreneur’s behaviour, it is radically different. With Profit First, you take a predetermined percentage of profit from every sale first, and only the remainder is available for expenses.

It’s a simple shift in perspective that leads to powerful results.

DON’T CHANGE HABITS; LEVERAGE THEM

Through pure willpower, many small business entrepreneurs try to force themselves to improve their bookkeeping skills and become more disciplined in their fiscal management.

But often the moment you face financial stress or bigger than expected expenses, you break your own money rules and start spending what you had saved.

The Profit First principle does not try to change your habits, it works with your existing habits.

For example, you may be like many business owners who check their bank balance (rather than their cash flow statement) to see if they have enough money to spend on a conference, a new work truck, or hire a new team member.

Profit First doesn’t ask you to change that habit. Instead, your incoming cash is allocated to different accounts, removing the temptation to “borrow” from yourself.

This means you will always have enough money to pay suppliers, staff, and taxes. You will always have money set aside as profit. Your business will become fiscally strong, and you will benefit from regular profit distributions.

The Psychology: Parkinson’s Law

When profit comes at the end of the equation, we are making do with what’s left over. There’s a little theory called Parkinson’s Law which tells us that work continually expands to fill however much time we have available to complete it.

If there are 6 months available to complete a project, we will spend 6 months working on it. Give us only 1 month, however, and we’ll get exactly the same amount of work done in ⅙ of the time.

Sometimes, taking less time improves the results–we are more focused and motivated. With a finite amount of time to complete the project, we defy our expectations and get the work done. We achieve the seemingly impossible.

Profits and expenses work under the same principle. When profit is at the end of the equation, all the money we have coming in is up for grabs.

Now replace “time” with “money” in Parkinson’s law. If we have X amount of money available, our expenses will increase, gobbling up all that money.

If we have less money available to spend, we will find a way to do the same thing for less.

The problem with viewing profit last (the GAAP formula) is that your expenses are free to expand and consume that space – money!

When the amount of money available for expenses is reduced and finite (the Profit First formula). We get the job done with the funds available.

And it’s not a magic trick. It will not come at the expense of the quality of our services or the products we produce. Instead, it forces us to stick to what is actually available – this much money, no more. We hustle a little harder, think a little deeper, and come up with innovative and creative ways to do things or create new methods that don’t require as much capital to spend on expenses.

We surprise ourselves.

We can help you SURPRISE yourself and steer you away from the “Bad Weather.”

When it comes to being a business owner, finances and bookkeeping can be daunting and frustrating. You have been keeping your own books but find that you don’t have the time to give them the attention it needs. Not to mention, it probably isn’t your favourite thing to do nor a skill that comes naturally to you.

Bringing a bookkeeper in as part of your business team can be a wise decision. But you can’t hire just anyone. You must ensure they are credible, trustworthy, and fit you and your business.

Here we will share some of our best tips for recognizing the value of hiring a bookkeeper,

When it’s time to hire a bookkeeper

How to find one that is a good fit for you and your business

Where to begin your search

What value do bookkeepers bring to your business?

Expert Care. While bookkeeping may seem simple enough to handle on your own, they bring a lot of value to your business. A good, credible bookkeeper has the education and skills to care for your finances thoroughly. Not only will they keep your records up-to-date and accurate, but they will also be able to provide real-time reports. When it comes to taxes and other business requirements, this is a must-have if you wish to avoid penalties and late fees.

Year-End Tax Prep. Not only are bookkeepers valuable for the day-to-day transaction, but they also help you to get and stay organized for year-end taxes. With complete and accurate records, you will end up with fewer hours spent on taxes which means a less expensive bill from your accountant.

Fraud Protection. Having another set of eyes on your finances is always a plus to minimize fraud and protect you. The ongoing process of account reconciliations and auditing will keep you safe.

Free You to Do What You Do Best. Finally, a bookkeeper will free up much-needed time for you to focus on your business. Without the concern for regular bookkeeping tasks, you can dedicate your time to your work and the future of your business.

How do you know that you need a bookkeeper?

Here are some tell-tale signs to be on the look-out for:

Time Management. You are finding that doing your bookkeeping takes up more time than you can afford.

Backlog of Bookkeeping Work. Despite your best efforts, your books are never up-to-date. Not only does that mean that your overall financial picture isn’t correct, but it can also mean that you may not be charging properly for your products or services. The cost of goods sold (COGS) changes regularly, and not being on top of them can cut into your revenue.

You are Paying Your Accountant Way Too Much. Your accountant ends up doing your bookkeeping. Then when it comes time for taxes, you find yourself sending way too many emails to your accountant. CPAs generally charge significantly more than bookkeepers. Not to mention, they don’t always provide monthly reports and insights like a bookkeeper will.

You’ve Missed Out on Tax Write-Offs. As you grow in your business, you begin learning about all the deductions you could be taking — then you realize you could have been using these deductions all along. Here’s where your bookkeeper comes in with the training to look for these types of expenses and categorize them for you.

Your Business Cash Flow Isn’t Predictable. As a small business, you don’t always know when your revenue will come in. The problem is that you have expenses and vendor payments to make along the way. Having cash flow sheets from your bookkeeper will help you see what money is still owed to you and what expenses are coming up.

Paying Estimated Taxes is Painful. Understanding your monthly finances will help you pay taxes without the fear of underpaying and owing later or overpaying and giving the CRA an interest-free loan. Your bookkeeper will help you calculate your taxes correctly.

Your Profits Aren’t Increasing Along With Your Sales. If you are finding that your sales are increasing, but your profits are staying the same, you need to be watching your profit margins. Your bookkeeper can help you make the decision to increase your profit margins.

Your Computer Has a History of Security Problems. Keeping your financial files secure is essential for your business. Handing off all of this information to a bookkeeper that is required to keep the most up-to-date security will prevent any chance of someone else getting their hands on your data.

Bookkeeping Isn’t Your Wheelhouse. When it comes to being a business owner, not everyone has training in bookkeeping. Why not allow someone with the training and expertise to take care of your precious finances?

Where should you look when hiring a bookkeeper?

When you decide it’s time to bring a bookkeeper to your team, you need to know where to find the ideal candidate. Here are a few of the best places to begin your search:

Ask around for referrals or references from your business community

Online search

Job banks, hiring, or talent websites

Bookkeeper groups or organizations

Business groups or organizations

How to find the right, qualified bookkeeper for you and your business.

Now that you are ready to find the right bookkeeper, you need to know that they are qualified, credible, and reliable.

Small businesses are where most cyber criminals are focusing these days. Small businesses with fewer resources than larger companies may be more inclined to pay a hacker’s ransom to get their systems back up and running or may have an intrusion go undetected until it’s too late.

Eight types of cyber attack

There are a number of different technical methods deployed by cybercriminals to gain access or disable the operations of businesses and individuals alike. There are always new methods proliferating, and some categories overlap, but these are terms that you’re most likely to hear.

Malware

Phishing

Ransomware

Denial of service

Man in the middle

Cryptojacking

SQL injection

Zero-day exploits

Here are ten ways to help keep your business safe from online threats

whether at an office or working from home.

Have a cybersecurity strategy. Have a plan in case your business is hacked. Update or install antivirus and monitoring software and test your existing capabilities to deter an attack.

Understand the risks. Educate yourself (and your employees) about the risks like email scams, phishing attacks, and viruses. Don’t open emails or click on links that look suspicious, download and install malware. Create strong passwords and change them every few months.

Don’t share personal info online. Guard your personal and financial information, and don’t share it online.

Be social savvy. When using social media networks, be cautious about the information you share.

Lockdown your Wi-Fi network. Ensure your Wi-Fi network in the office or at home is password-protected.

Protect your computers. Lock your screen when you’re away from your desk. If you’re travelling with a laptop or mobile device you use for work, keep it secure and always be mindful of where it is.

Scrutinize your business partners. Consider your supply chain or partners with which you regularly conduct business. Are their security protocols up to date? What security measures do they use to protect their companies and partners?

Back up your mission-critical data. Automate and regularly backup and encrypt all essential business information to store at a secure off-site location or in the cloud.

Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is affordable for small businesses and required if your employees work remotely. VPNs establish secure network connections by encrypting your online traffic and disguising your identity by hiding your IP address. VPNs prevent people outside your secure network from seeing which websites and data you access online.

Think about getting cyber liability insurance. Even if your business has stringent cybersecurity software and policies, there is no guarantee that you won’t get hacked or suffer a data breach. Restoring systems takes time and money, and you could be exposed to a lawsuit from third parties. Getting cyber protection may cover your business’s legal costs and damages.

DID YOU KNOW?

Canadians lost over $230 million to online fraud during 2021!

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) estimated that Canadians lost a total of CAD $230million to fraud in 2021. Over CAD $100 million of this sum was associated with online fraud.

A KPMG spokesperson said in a news release that:

“The reliance on digital platforms and cloud computing has put more sensitive data within the reach of cybercriminals, who are becoming increasingly more adept at accessing or hacking into ‘secure’ customer databases to steal identities.”

According to the results of an 2021 online survey by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), 47% of small business owners admit they don’t allocate any portion of their annual operating budgets to implementing cybersecurity defences. [source]

October is Cyber Awareness Month.

The Government of Canada offers free resources to raise awareness about cyber security and help fight phishing.

Get Cyber Safe is a national public awareness campaign created to inform Canadians about cyber security and the simple steps they can take to protect themselves online.

The new year is just around the corner. Is it time to make some changes?

If you’re a small business owner, chances are you’re dealing with your bookkeeping on your own. After all, you went into business for yourself. While many entrepreneurs enjoy the freedom and perks of owning their business, it also means that expenses are kept to a minimum for success. Hiring a bookkeeper is a decision many small business owners struggle with. That’s why we’ve compiled the top three reasons why hiring a bookkeeper may be the best decision you’ll make for your business in 2023!

Profit Margins

Owning a small business means keeping your profit margins at a minimum. A professional bookkeeper can keep track of these margins and offer guidance on controlling operating expenses for a better return on investment. A bookkeeper can also manage your monthly transactions, payroll, and government fees and ensure that bills are paid promptly and accordingly. A bookkeeper pays for themselves by freeing up your valuable time, finding cost savings, avoiding penalties for late filings, and following up on accounts receivable, so you get paid on time.

The Ups and Downs of Tax Season

Bookkeeping and tax planning only become more complicated in the first few years of owning a business. A bookkeeper can alleviate the stress of taxes, especially during tax season! (which is coming up very soon). Employing a bookkeeper, even on a temporary basis, to accurately report your expenses and budgets may be the way to go.

Stress and more Stress

No one likes stress. The first few years of running your business require many long hours and dedication. In fact, the first few years are the most difficult as you scramble to make ends meet and become profitable. Chances are you are managing all the different areas, such as sales, marketing and bookkeeping. Let’s be honest, not all of us are good with numbers! Juggling multiple tasks at once can translate into neglecting other crucial parts of the business. A bookkeeper can help with administration and free you up to concentrate on growing your business.

Doesn’t that sound great?

While employing a bookkeeper may be a tough decision for a small business owner, the decision may be worth it in the long run. Think BIG, as it could save money and time and reduce stress.

At Bookminders, we use the Pure Bookkeeping system so that everyone on our highly skilled team follows the same processes, uses the same reports, and records information the same way.

And

We Lead With Profit!

Our firm has received an Advanced Level Certification in Profit First. One of the few selected globally!

What does this mean for you and your small business?

Pure Bookkeeping is a proven, widely-used system that guarantees compliance, consistency, and quality in your business finances. Paired with the Profit First method that we bring to all of our clients, working with us will help you build the financial foundation you need for a profitable and sustainable business.
